I have always had a deep appreciation of the role symbols play in our everyday lives, whether they be the spandex clad ubermesch of the comicbook universe, or the slippery language used by politico's to justify another bomb being dropped...
We are surrounded by symbols. All of which have a imminent component, be that of the audio, visual or spatial kind...and a metaphorical aspect...
This is the part of any symbol that seems to have the power to evoke more that just our attentions, but also our imaginations...like the shadows dancing in a narrow alleyway that fill one with trepidation, or the gentle birdsong that alerts us to the glorious day awaiting one upon opening the eyes...
The Phoenix is a symbol for the movement for social justice and ecological sustainability... The Phoenix is a creature born from it's own destruction. It rises from the end of one live directly into another.
We can take the metaphor of rebirth through destruction to acknowledge the destruction of the past century and use it as our own rebirth. From out of the ashes of the pain and fire of the past we can, as pioneers for redemption...pioneers for responsiblity...pioneers for sustainablity...create a new society driven by the need to never have to enter the fire again...

Very inspiring article Luke. Have you thought about standing against Gordon Brown? :-)
