Leona Gray-Mason - Owner, Recycle2shop.com

How old are you?

What’s your occupation and who do you work for?
I own and manage Recycle2shop.com, an e-tail shop selling 100’s of brand new products made from recycled materials. All of our products are made here in the UK with Brit ‘waste’ saved from landfill; made by small businesses, and professional artists, designers and craftspeople.

How long have been doing this?
Recycle2shop went ‘live’ June 19, 2006 but it took 2 years of research and a learning curve to get it going.

What is it about your job that makes it ethical?
Making recycling profitable by ‘closing the loop’ – making the end product profitable will increase recyling and save a bit more of our earth from landfill.

What’s the best bit about your job?
Meeting & supporting great recyclers.

What’s the worst thing?
Not selling zillions!

What have the last 12 months been like for you?
Exhilarating, mind boggling,

What were you doing before this?

What was your very first full-time job?
Office manager.

What advice would you give to someone wishing to embark on the same sort of work as you?
As a social entrepreneur, know how much you can afford to loose and stick to the budget.

Have you got any plans for the next 12 months you’d like to share with us?
Back home to Canada to create Recycle2shop.ca.

What do you do to relax?
Hah – what’s that???

Who do you live with?
My wonderful man died 3 years ago so I live with me. :-)

Whereabouts do you live?
In the wilds of northern Essex.

If you were Prime Minister, what’s the very first thing you would do?
Slap a huge tax on airplane fuel.

As cheap and easily available oil is expect to run out in the next couple of decades, what do you think will be the predominant form of transport in 2027?
Any kind of boat – unless you live in the Pennines. (Editor's note: We have canals in the Pennines too!)

Have you got any guilty carbon secrets?
Air travel to Canada – do the offsetting thing but doesn’t ease my conscience at all!

What have you done that you were most proud of?
Recycle2shop and a working Trustee of DESTiny – a charity that helps disabled people start their own business.

What single issue are you most concerned about in the world at large?
Our disregard for life and this earth.

Which person in the public eye do you most admire and why?
Anita Roddick – she made a difference!

What’s your website address?

What are your three favourite other websites of the moment? davidsuzuki.org; desmogblog.com; freecycle.org.uk
